    Advertising is the action of calling something to the attention of the public by using announcements (Merriam-Webster, 2016). Basically, it is a way to make a broadcast for a new product. For example new shoes by (example) or even a new type of service for healthcare insurance. Several kinds of media may show some form of advertisement such as newspaper, radio, magazine, and television. However, there are advantages as well as disadvantages with advertising in the media.

    According to an article published in the New York Times, 96.7% of American households own television sets (Gilani, 2016). Television advertising is the most popular way to reach a large amount of people. The ads are usually in the form of a commercial. There is a powerful impact on its audience because different things such as audio, video and text are pulled together to make ads interesting and credible (Gilani, 2016). This combination is used to guarantee the understanding and favor from the audience. Props are also used in commercials such as models, background sets or graphics which help create a stronger impact on the audience. A disadvantage of ads or commercials is simply the fact that commercials are usually ignored by television watchers. During commercials, people may take bathroom breaks, snack breaks or simply find something else to watch. Another disadvantage is that television ads are very expensive and usually last for only 30 seconds. These disadvantages can limit the effectiveness of television advertising.

    Radio advertising is another medium that is used to reach a certain number of people. Radio stations have the ability to access a large audience while they are home or in cars. Mobile phone users also have access to radio applications as well. There are 6,000 radio stations in the U.S. with local, regional and national coverage (Linton, 2016). A disadvantage of radio ads is the fact that the radio delivers its information at a fast pace which can be hard to keep up with and people may miss the message. Another disadvantage is that every advertisement isn’t played on every station so everyone may not be informed if they are listening to a different station.

    Social media is another way to advertise a product or a service. Companies can place ads on websites like (example), (example) and even (example). The advantages of advertising on social media is having the ability to reach young people or even people who may not watch television or listen to the radio often. A disadvantage is some advertisements can be ignored by people on social media. For example, when a person is scrolling through their (example) page, they may ignore the ads or even when watching a (example) video, they may skip the ad in the beginning so they can listen to their music.

    In conclusion, advertising in the media is a good way to get the attention of a wide range of people from all over the world. The different types of media can include radio stations, television and even social media. However, there are advantages as well as disadvantages with advertising in the media, but every form of advertisement isn’t for every business.
